Teaching Case Studies

Learn from the experiences of others with these case studies illustrating best practices in WIL across various disciplines. ACEN provides a platform for sharing successful learning and teaching and supporting innovative practices. The case studies reflect effective student support, curriculum design, teaching and learning, and community and industry engagement. You can submit your own case study for publication.

Assessments & Outcomes

Effective assessment is crucial for measuring student learning and ensuring the quality of your WIL program.

Designing Authentic Assessment

Your WIL assessment design should be supported by authentic tasks that are aligned with learning goals and graduate outcomes. Consider the following principles outlined in the Quality WIL Framework (2019):

  • Alignment with Professional Requirements: Ensure your WIL curriculum and assessments are reflecting professional accreditation requirements and support ongoing career and employability development.
  • Measurable Learning Gains: Student learning gains should be measurable against intended outcomes. This can be achieved through clear and timely feedback from industry partners and opportunities for students to provide their own feedback.
  • Benchmarking: Regularly benchmark your WIL assessments and student outcomes to identify areas for improvement. This can involve internal and external reviews of assessment tasks and feedback processes.

Faculty Development

Investing in your own professional development is key to delivering high-quality WIL.

The National Higher Education Work-Integrated Learning Strategy emphasizes the importance of faculty development to build the capacity of academic staff in designing and delivering WIL. This includes:

Fostering a Culture of WIL: Raise awareness of the value of WIL and foster a collective commitment to its integration across the curriculum.

Building Capability: Engage in professional development opportunities to build your skills and knowledge in WIL practice. This could include mentorship programs, workshops, and accessing resources from peak bodies like WIL Australia (ACEN).

Supporting Research and Scholarship: Contribute to the evidence base for WIL by engaging in research and scholarship to promote excellence in the field.
